Description: Operation: Mountain Freedom (2017)

In 2013, President of Indonesia; Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of the Democratic Party was taken ill for unknown reasons and forced to step down from office.

Vice-President Boediono carried on until the next scheduled elections in 2014, in which they were narrowly beaten by the IPP (Indonesian Prosperity Party): A left-of-centre Moderate Islamist party with ideological ties to China.

Accusations of electoral fraud surrounded their election, but on investigation by International Observers; evidence was found to be insubstantial and unconfirmed.

Despite marginally improving the country economically over the next few years, loss of freedoms resulted in a decrease of popularity for The IPP.

With an election looming in 2018; They sought to divert attention by increasing tensions with Malaysia and Brunei; citing elements within their governments as responsible for several Bombings throughout Indonesia, as well as increasing claims on both the oil-rich island of Ambalat to the east of Borneo and the globally important shipping lanes through the Straight of Malacca to the west;leading to several near confrontations by naval vessels.

Relations have deteriorated sharply since the defeat of the Democratic Party, and worsened further after an accidental sinking of an Indonesian fishing vessel was portrayed as a deliberate attack by Malaysia.

The IPP have responded by calling for Malaysian territories on the Island of Borneo to be annexed into Indonesia, with analysts fearing that the phenomenally wealthy nation of Brunei will subsequently be targeted if successful.

Between 2015 and 2017, well armed and supplied separatist rebels in the Malaysian populace bordering Indonesia; wishing to unify the two nations have carried out numerous low-scale bombings and campaigns of intimidation among the local areas.

In 2016, the Malaysian Prime Minister was critically injured while on a state visit to meet with the Australian Prime Minister to discuss access to trade routes and resources. Whilst surviving; He remained in hospital for nearly three months, during which time the political instability, along with worsening economic troubles and unpopular governmental policies have pushed many people towards the Malaysian Integration Party; seen as the political wing of the Malaysian rebels; whose manifesto calls for uniting the Malaysia of Borneo with that of Indonesia amid the rising economic standards seen under the IPP. As a result, elections have been called, to be held in mid 2017.

Tensions jumped sharply in March 2017, when a Malaysian army helicopter on a training mission got lost and accidentally strayed into Indonesian air space;upon which it was damaged in a confrontation with the IAF and forced to land. The soldiers were subsequently detained.

Calls by the Malaysian government for the soldiers to be released were denied,to which they responded by increasing military forces along the borders.

Bombings throughout Malaysian cities increased as a result.

In the months prior to the election, the Malaysian Government, in co-ordination with the Sultan of Brunei; who, fearing for the security of his small nation; ask the United Nations to oversee voting to prevent a repeat of the allegations of corruption and fraud that led to the rise of the Indonesian Prosperity Party four years before, as well as to provide armed observers in key areas along the border for security.

Secretly, the leaders and Militaries of both countries have also asked for a task force of special forces ‘advisors' made up from soldiers from the United States, The United Kingdom and Australian & New Zealand troops to assist in the training of local military, the elimination of Indonesian forces crossing the borders, interdiction of supplies and rebel support, as well as investigating whom is supplying Indonesian forces and Malaysian rebels with hi-tech weaponry and training.

The main focus for the task force; designated ‘Force 41' is the mountainous border region in the northern part of the island of Borneo; in particular the area surrounding Banjaran Tama Abu.

Knowledge of the operation is limited to select Government and Military personnel.

If all goes according to plan; the conflict will pass mostly unknown by the world at large.
