Several years after the final subjugation of Chechnya, the Russian economy has all but collapsed. Increasing pressures from the bulging Chinese superpower mean that military attention was required elsewhere, with Chechnya no longer seen as an area of geo-strategic importance. The Russian Army has simply left, leaving behind them a non-existent economy.
Chechen militia groups in the area had been far from quashed, however. Although activity in the region has temporarily ceased, this time has been used to amass arms and troops. Gradually, smaller factions have united under the banner of Ruslan Kadyrov, a fighter from the Vedeno region with aspirations to join the wealthy ranks of mafia entrepreneurs.
The supply route from Russia to the Middle East runs through territory formerly under the control of Russian troops. Unguarded, it is now a perfect feeding tube for the militia bands. The first attack was one of unprecedented success; a convoy of weapons, food, clothing and many other treats from Iran and destined for Moscow was now being appreciated by a whole new audience.
Ruslan wasted little time on the locals either, most of whom he considered to be collaborators to the old Russian occupiers. Unarmed civilians stood little chance against his private force, and those villagers and townsfolk who refused to join were tortured and killed.
As he progressed with his personal blitzkrieg, Ruslan made yet more gains. In their haste to withdraw, the Russians had left some vital equipment behind with scant protection. Soon Kadyrov had access to a limited selection of ground vehicles and surface to air missiles, as well as some artillery. It was this artillery that now effectively closed the road between Russia and Iran. As well as material possessions, he also made an emotional one in the form of a Western Journalist, moderately well known for his work, and quickly noticed as missing in his home country. For Ruslan, he would be a valuable bargaining chip.
Moscow has been surprisingly slow to notice this loss. All eyes had turned to the East, with Chinese border incursions being the highest priority for military strategists, and the authorities wanted to avoid having to send troops back in to the Chechen region. Instead, they chose to leave it to the mafia to sort out; after all, the mafia used the trade route far more than they did. They chose to forego the route, closing it down hundreds of miles into Russia.
Fortunately for the people of Chechnya, their plight had not gone unnoticed. Western aid organisations were quick to condemn the militia groups, and to condemn Russia for failing to police the area that they themselves had ravaged. Soon they had organised aid relief into the area, but this relief was quickly seized by Kadyrovs men, and used as the controlling currency over the region.
Three abducted convoys later and the Western patience has run out. Aid is desperately required & a NATO/EU Task Force is mobilized for deployment to the area with the intention of destroying the militia elements & ensuring future convoys would go through unmolested.
NATO primary objective will be to rescue the captured journalist & safely extract to NATO TAC area. Latest information indicates that the journalist was injured during capture & is immobile, possibly unconscious. Rescue teams will have to carry the casualty or use a makeshift stretcher to safely extract. At all times the health of the casualty must be monitored.
Secondary objectives will be numerous & will be affected by the kinetic situation on the ground. However a key element will be verifying the location of a possible cache containing information relating to fission material that Chechen rebels are attempting to purchase on the black market. Objective will be to covertly photograph this cache in place including all contents. This must be located & left in-situ unless the operational situation deteriorates.
Russian objectives will be the same as NATO.
Chechen objectives - prevent the rescue of the wounded hostage. Emplace the cache & remotely defend same. Due to manpower shortages & the scope of the battle area, troops are restricted short duration taskings on static defence on any target, At all other times they must be interdicting the enemy troops in order to spoil any assault or rescue plans.
