The FN Herstal SCAR-L is a 5.56mm chambered modular rifle designed for the US Army. My US history on 5.56 weapons has something to be desired for however I am told that the original intention was to replace the M16. Sadly due to the current financial crisis & a lack of "performance", the SCAR-Ls have stopped production. The existing SCARS are being re purposed for special forces (so I am told). My knowledge of 5.56 weapons is very rusty.

The SCAR-L takes the same STANMAGs as the M16 and M4 which makes re-purposing the 5.56mm NATO ammo very easy. The rifle comes in short barrel and long barrel versions in the option of black or "desert" which is essentially a sand colour. The colour in the upper receiver is a golden colour with a sand coloured lower receiver on the desert version.

FN later produced an EGLM (Enhanced Grenade Launching Module) for the SCAR series. This fires the M203 40mm shells. The unit was designed to fit onto the SCAR-L whilst "complementing" the SCAR-L chassis.

In game performance is good. The 30 round magazine combined with the occasional jam does create a new element in the airsoft games which for some is bad. Before I was running a GBBR, I was using 70 round mid caps and real caps on my G36 so the ammo limit isn't a problem.
The rifle makes one hell of a noise with a very satisfying "clack" each time. The recoil is noticeable but not overwhelming and a very rewarding (and sometimes horrific) noise is made when the bolt locks back. This usually signifies my imminent doom as I will be chasing someone down a corridor and they hear the bolt lock and turn tail on me!

The build quality has something to be desired for. The machining of the materials itself is perfect however the materials used are not up to the job! Overall for the price I am very happy with this rifle! I am sure that if you compared to an AEG of the same price, this matches or even out performs the AEG!

- Fair Price
- Accurate dis-assembley
- Very good finish
- Good hop & Barrel
- Poor manufacture materials
- Occasional Jams
- Occasional Misfeeds
